Dr. Benjamin Seltzer

Dr. Marwan Maalouf

Barrow Neurological Institute and our community as a whole recently lost two men dedicated to the field of neurology and in particular, Alzheimer’s disease. Drs. Benjamin Seltzer and Marwan Maalouf made great contributions clinically, through research and by teaching the next generation of neurologists.  They were cognitive physicians at the Barrow Neurological Institute who believed in the incredible power of clinical medicine linked to research.

Dr. Benjamin Seltzer was the Director of the Cognitive and Behavior Neurology Department at Barrow Neurological Institute. He was also given the honor to be on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Alzheimer's Consortium.  His most recent project was writing a book with Dr. Deepak Pandya on the Cerebral Cortex, a sheet of neural tissue that plays a critical role in such functions as memory, attention, thought and consciousness. The book will be published by Oxford University Press next year.

Dr. Maalouf was a young physician rising in his field and was liked and respected by the residents he worked with.  He was actively engaged in basic research stemming from his clinical practice to uncover biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s disease in an effort to identify potential new treatments.

The Barrow Neurological Foundation has established the Seltzer/Maalouf Memorial Fund to support young faculty who are pursuing careers as clinician investigators.  The purpose of the award is to fund pilot studies that provide preliminary data used to strengthen applications for more permanent funding from other sources.

Please consider making a gift to support the continuation of this work in memory of these two clinicians.
